My parents immigrated to the states from the UK. Both of them were extremely creative and growing up, we learned a lot by observing and helping in the reconstruction of an 1800’s farmhouse in Ohio, which is where we settled.

My family immigrated to the states from the UK. Both of my parents were extremely creative and growing up, we learned a lot by observing and helping in the reconstruction of an 1800’s farmhouse in Ohio, which is where we settled. Dad was eclectic and loved everything that represented industrial style and salvage (understatement!!!) while mom was traditional and saw beauty in simplicity. Blending the shared design styles became a way of life because we didn’t have the means to focus on any predetermined style - but it was all heart and they were trying to rediscover home again, this time in a new country.

Mom was constantly trying to refine the bits and pieces of things that dad brought home (or built) i.e. paint, sew, mend! Dad was unwilling to part with anything and felt that everything had meaning and a use. Looking back, our home environment had a profound effect on me. Certainly, too much to express in a blog, but I oftentimes think about how much they did with such little money and lots of heart.

At House Counsel, we believe that environments have a profound effect on daily living. Our homes reflect and celebrate deep expressions of connection to family and friends. Personal living spaces, regardless of style, represent traces of our journey and they are emotional, beautiful, complex and comfortable.

Some people are moving to a new city or state while others are moving out of their parents’ home for the first time or getting married – a time of rebirth and change!  And many of us are (always) redefining our existing spaces with fresh paint or new furniture!!

One might think it’s all quite basic but in reality, changing our home environment is all heart. Regardless of the circumstance, we are all rediscovering home in some way!
